In a 3D setup, the leader is more than just a spring; it is the navigation point. When you increase the speed of the Picote Miller to expand the chain, the spare spring ensures that the shaft head stays centered. This prevents the heavy 7-ridge U-carbide chains from striking uncontrollably, which could overload the flexible shaft.

Stability in expansion

The 3D chain is unique because it "grows" with the pipe. The leader plays a dual role here:

Guidance: It finds its way through bends and transitions, allowing the chain to follow smoothly behind it.
Vibration Damping: The spring absorbs some of the kinetic energy released when milling concrete or heavy lime, extending the life of your entire set-up.

Wear from friction: With heavy use in cast iron pipes, the steel of the spring wears thin, reducing structural integrity.
Corrosion: When exposed to aggressive fluids for long periods of time without proper cleaning afterwards.

Expert tip: Check the leader before any 3D job. A bent or worn spring can lead to unbalanced rotation, which not only degrades cleaning results, but also causes unnecessary wear on your Miller's bearings.
