How does a professional pipe inspection happen? From initial check to clear report

A pipe inspection is the fastest and most reliable way to assess the condition of a drainage system without breaking or guessing. Whether it's recurring blockages, moisture problems, odor nuisance or a completion check after works, a camera inspection provides objective evidence, clear images and targeted recommendations. In this article, we take you through the entire process, focusing on preparation, the right tools and reporting that makes all the difference.

When is an inspection appropriate?

An inspection makes sense as soon as symptoms recur or when there is doubt about the condition of the pipework. Think frequent clogs, bubbling noises, unpleasant odors, a slow-flowing toilet, moisture spots in walls or ceilings, or a planned renovation where you want to eliminate risks in advance. An objective video inspection also provides guidance for buying or selling files and prevents discussions afterwards.

On-site preparation

A good inspection starts with a brief intake: what is the complaint, where and when does it occur, what appliances are connected? This is followed by a safety and hygiene check. Personal protective equipment is provided, floors and plumbing are protected and the most logical access point is chosen, such as a siphon under the sink, a cleaning opening or the toilet. Where necessary, one preflushes the pipe to gain visibility, without erasing traces that are diagnostically relevant.

Choosing the right camera

Not every pipeline requires the same approach. In narrow, winding sections and short distances, compact inspection cameras perform exceptionally well thanks to their maneuverability. For larger diameters, longer routes and robust deployment, more powerful systems are the logical choice, with a sturdy push cable and more stable image at higher push and pull forces. This reduces the number of access points and retrieves diagnostic images faster.

Step by step: this is how the inspection proceeds

After preparation, the camera is inserted at the chosen access point. During insertion, the operator follows the image live on the monitor and takes into account bends, joints and height differences. It is noted at what distance and depth certain anomalies occur, such as cracks, subsidence, root growth or deposits. For a toilet inspection, a more robust camera can go directly through the toilet, while for a sink or shower drain, a smaller camera navigates more smoothly through siphons and tight bends. When the image is momentarily less clear, targeted flushing or pulling the camera back a bit to refocus is possible. Everything is recorded continuously so fragments can later be stilled, slowed down or annotated. If necessary, one tests from multiple access points to visualize the entire trajectory.

Locating inside the building with sonar

Images show what is happening ín the pipe, but when intervening, you want to know exactly where that problem is under the floor or behind the wall. That's why the camera is often combined with a sonar technique. The transmitter in the camera head is picked up above ground so that the position and depth can be marked. This prevents unnecessary breaking and allows targeted intervention in exactly the right place.

What do you typically see on camera?

Common fixes include deposits from grease or lime, poorly executed joints, sagging pipes, cracks from movement or frost, and ingrowth of roots in exterior pipes. Construction errors such as reverse slopes or unfinished connections are also immediately revealed. The video allows one to objectify discussions and determine priorities: what needs to be done now, what can be scheduled, and what is cosmetic but not urgent?

Reporting that holds up

The inspection is followed by a clear report with videos, still images and brief conclusions for each finding. It identifies the likely cause, the risk of delay and the technically appropriate repair options. If several scenarios exist, the impact is explained in terms of time, cost and disruption. Preferably, the repair should be scheduled consecutively so that knowledge and context are not lost.

Maintenance and prevention

A good inspection ends with advice to prevent recurrence. Consider periodic flushing of high-risk lines, proper use of plumbing and grease traps, and realistic follow-up agreements. By detecting problems early, you not only save repairs but also extend the life of the entire drainage system.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an inspection take? That depends on the length and complexity of the route and the number of access points. For a single complaint, it can often be done within the hour; for extensive routes or multiple devices, they schedule more time.

Should flushing always be done? Not necessarily. If the pipe is so contaminated that visibility is lacking, flushing is targeted to make observation reliable. The goal is never "clean pipes," but rather "clear images."

Can a camera get stuck? With proper use and a thoughtful route, this is rare. The risk is assessed in advance and the right camera chosen. Moreover, with the localization function, one always knows where the camera head is.

Do I get the images afterwards? Yes. The video recordings and selected photos are included, along with a brief summary and recommendations.
